August 31, 1864: Mt. Gibbs

Started for the summit but took the next peak south of Mt. Dana, fearing Olmsted could not reach the other. This I managed to get his horse up so that he rode to the top where we lunched. He named the peak Mt. Gibbs. View very fine but inferior to that from Mt. Dana. Strange enough, we saw a group of persons on that peak clear against the sky. Only part of Mono Lake visible, a hill shutting out its center. Day was very cold. Returned and went down the valley six to eight miles and camped.
