August 30, 1864: Mono Pass

Mono Pass Trail 14

Lake east of Mono Pass; by Tom Hilton, on Flickr

Came on about 10 miles. Stopped a short time at the Soda Springs and little farther up lunched. Met three men with a deer and bought half of it. Then on and camped near summit of Mono Pass at about 10,200 feet. The scenery all day very grand but not equal to that which we have seen about the head of Kings River. Both today and yesterday great banks of cumulus clouds on the Sierra at times and at others light cirrus far above the highest peaks. The air is very clear and cold.
