August 28, 1864: Yosemite Valley

September 7, 2014

DSC_1173Most lovely morning, the Falls very slight, barely saw its shower of spray. The shadow of the Sentinel very sharp on the sides of the Cathedral. Wrote letter. Bid goodbye to my escort and started down the valley. Was to have been off by three but did not, of course–were off about sundown….

We rode down the valley about five miles until long after dark. We rode along by Tutucanula after dark. It loomed up against the sky like a great storm cloud. We slept by the river below the rock by the fork of the trail up the hill.
