August 24, 1864: Mariposa Grove

September 5, 2014

Camp 199

A crowd left for Mariposa, our boys. Mr. and Mrs. Ashburner stopped over. In p.m., Ashburner and I visited the grove of Big Trees known as the Mariposa Grove, although actually in Fresno County [now Madera]. (We passed near the Fresno Grove yesterday.) Trees fine, grand, as that species always is, some on hills, some in valleys. A pleasant ride six miles from Clark’s (called five) and 2400 feet above it with a grand view of the surrounding landscape.
