Daily Alta California, January 20, 1864:
Zimmerman not Murdered
The reported murder of Zimmerman and family is fortunately untrue. He was attacked and robbed of eighty-five dollars, three horses and saddles, and the lives of himself and family threatened, and they would have been killed but for one of the robbers, who interfered and saved them. Zimmerman is here in town to-night.
Arrest and Escape of the Robbers of Zimmerman
We learn that at five o’clock this morning, a constable from Alameda county handcuffed together and placed in the stage the two prisoners arrested for the robbery of Zimmerman at the Mountain House. The officer then took a seat by the side of the driver, and they started. At the first stopping place the officer went to take a look at his prisoners, and behold one had vamosed.
