[Today] Hoffmann and I visited another grove of big trees, which is near—grand old trees, but not equal to the Calaveras trees—we saw no tree over twenty feet in diameter, but a stump was twenty-three feet inside the bark.

The trail grew rougher, across canyons, over hills. At last we crossed a hill, and a view of a portion of the valley burst upon us in all its beauty—the valley far below us, its peaks rising still higher than we were. We descended into the valley, passed the Bridal Veil Fall, and camped beneath the enormous precipice called Tu-tuc-a-nu-la.

Specimens collected: Hackelia micrantha; Populus tremuloides; Lathyrus sulphureus; Arnica dealbata; Comandra umbellata subsp. californica; Viola adunca; Lupinus breweri; Carex multicaulis; Carex sartwelliana; Carex whitneyi.
