May 29, 1863: Hornitos
Gabb left [last] night. So we can be said to have terminated that trip. Our poor animals were jaded, for we had ridden them over a thousand miles in less than two months—in fact, I rode 1,100 in the two months. I stopped a day at Hornitos to examine some copper mines there, all of which proved to be very poor; but the people are excited there on the matter of copper, and much money is lost and won in copper speculations.
