August 20, 1862: Shasta City
[Today] I got up at 4 A.M. to take the stage, but had to wait three hours before it came along, heavily loaded with mail matter and boot full. Only two men could ride inside, the rest on top. A hot ride of forty miles brought us into Shasta about two o’clock—over hills and through gulches, very dusty. The last four miles was through a mining region.
The boys had arrived ahead of me and had camped near town.
