February 2, 1861: En Route to San Gabriel Canyon

February 2, 2011

Camp 111

The loss of our horse detained us a day longer than we expected, but we were off this morning…for San Gabriel Canyon, about thirty-eight miles distant, where the rest were encamped. We were detained, however, by a “slough,” and failed to make it. Although we had started very early, night found us five or six miles short. So we pitched camp…

1Probably in the vicinity of present-day San Dimas or Glendora; Brewer does not give enough detail to pinpoint the location with more precision than that.
