March 1, 1862: San Francisco

[Today], Ashburner left for the East on business of the Survey, to do some chemical work there….and much we miss him, I assure you. He was a jolly good fellow, good at a joke, goodnatured, philosophical, and with a great fund of humor and of anecdote.
